The Utah Million Hearts Coalition has compiled this three part webinar to ensure physicians and clinic staff are up-to-date on the most current hypertension guidelines.

Purpose

This three part webinar will try to accomplish the following changes in office practice:

  1. Improve the accuracy of office BP measurement, both manual BP measurement but especially favoring the use of sequential automated BP measurement using validated devices.
  2. Improve the detection of white-coat hypertension using sequential automated BP measurement on patients isolated in the exam room and/or 24 hour ambulatory BP measurement and/or accurate home BP monitoring.
  3. Improve the use of optimal pharmacologic therapy through the use of standardized antihypertensive medication algorithms
  4. Utilize team care with the creation of registries of patients with uncontrolled hypertension, MA/LPNs to train patients in accurate home BP measurement, and RNs/clinical pharmacists/clinicians to adjust antihypertensive regimens according to clinician-directed algorithms every 2-4 weeks as needed.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, the participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the magnitude of and contributors to uncontrolled hypertension in the U.S.
  2. Accurately measure manual office BP and/or use sequential automated office BP on patients in isolation to accurately measure BP and reduce white-coat hypertension
  3. Effectively use out-of-office BP measurement with 24 hour ambulatory BP measurement and/or home BP monitoring to accurately diagnose hypertension and facilitate improvement in hypertension control rates.
  4. Implement the use of a standardized treatment algorithm to improve hypertension control rates.
  5. Implement team care including creation of a registry of uncontrolled hypertension patients, training staff in accurate office BP measurement, and training staff and patients in accurate home BP monitoring.
