CMS Requests Input on Increasing Use of Diabetes Self-Management Training, Expanding Diabetes Prevention Program

Included with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) release of the Physician Fee Schedule is an opportunity to submit comments about barriers to uptake of the Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) benefit under Medicare. The comment period lasts until September 6, and we encourage you to share your input on any difficulties you have encountered and/or recommendations for improving participation in the DSMT benefit.

CMS is also looking to expand the Diabetes Prevention Program to help more Medicare beneficiaries avoid the disease. The program began as an eight-state demonstration project and seeks to roll it out to the full Medicare Program, an opportunity through the Affordable Care Act.

CMS suggests launching the program in January 2018 and wants input on whether to spread it nationally or in select markets beyond the original eight states. Comments will be accepted through September 6, 2016. Response to comments will be issued in a final rule. The proposed rule was issued July 15, 2016.
